FYI ...

Just went to check on the latest version of Firebird and for the GTK2/XFT version so many members have recommended lately and then noticed the new version (0.8) along with the name change to Firefox.

*SIGH*, I liked firebird's name so much.....Oh well, I heard rumor of fixing the bug which made it display binary files wrong....

didn't they just give a new name a couple versions ago? what a bunch of flakes! :D

Yeah, I loved the firebird name. Oh well, just installed the plugin to search www.google.com/linux. Just click on the G before the search entry and it'll pop down add engines, click on that and search for www.google.com/linux. It's now my default search engin for that.

I have to say, I LOVE fireXXXX!! :D

Isn't the eventual name going to be 'Mozilla-Browser'? At least, IIRC.

Name changes are as follows:

Phoenix -> Firebird
Firebird -> Firefox

I think they've been quite unlucky with people of similarly named projects getting a bit huffy.

Anyway - surfing on Firefox at work now.

right i do recall now that you mention it that the last name change was due to someone else having the 'rights' to the name phoenix. is that what happened this time as well? maybe they shoud just call the app mozilla-web browsing thingy!

As am I though at home.

Firefox of course uses ~./phoenix as did Firebird so all your settings, bookmarks etc. will still be there.

Heh - mebbe they should rename it "IE" - that would confuse everyone :)

Or maybe "Agood", as in 'I don't use IE, I use Agood browser'.......

No problem Pablo.

I just know how easily you get confused, so I figured I had better explain about the name change first. :p

I wonder how long it will be before someone starts whining about Firefox too.

Let's hope Clint Eastwood doesn't hear about it.

I think the name "Intelligent Explorer 6" would be a good one.

Hey, what do you guys think about Firefox's logo? I like it a lot more than Firebird's one.

Oh, eh, that's where they were hiding :D Thanks.
Don't suppose it's any harm to install Firefox into the Firebird directory? Might have to change a few links here and there though... The user prefs are all still in ~/.phoenix though right, so even if I wipe it completely and install the new one, it should be ok. Apart from the plugins...

hmm. ive noticed my scroll bars(the ones at the side) keep ceasing to exist.
out of the 7 times I loaded the browser I've only had the scroll bar once.
anyone know how to fix this? or is this a bug?

Why change the name?

To avoid overlap. The colloquial name "Firebird" is also in use by another open source project. While we don't believe our use of the Firebird name infringed on their trademark, we wanted to be responsive to the concerns of fellow open source developers.

Now I love firebird, and I really don't care what it's called, but I would really like a name that is presentable...... "fire fox" just doesn't sound like a good browser.

Flamerider anyone?

I'd wish they'd hurry up and make this the official mozilla browser, so then we can all just call it mozilla.

The Theme API changed from 0.7 to 0.8, I think. Just wait until the creator of the theme gets 'round to updating it.

Real Player plugin from firebird doesn't seem to be compatible with fierefox. I keep getting this error:

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/share/firefox/plugins/rpnp.so [/usr/share/firefox/plugins/rpnp.so: undefined symbol: __pure_virtual]

Might just need an update?

Might just need an update? Errors with __pure_virtual are usually caused by not having a libstdc++ from g++ 2.95 available. There is a very hackish workaround posted here:

http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213234

which might work, if you don't have a copy of whatever libstdc++ that rpnp.so is looking for.

Simply put no one will complain, mozilla put in for a trademark/copyright on the name. Phoenix was scrapped cuz some other company had the rights to the name. The reason Firebird was scrapped was because another Open Source Developer (Firebird DB) was complaining a bit about the mix ups between the two. Mozilla decided that helping out other open sourcer's was good, renamed, and applied for a trademark/copyright (don't know the proper term) for FireFox.

I'll give that a try, thanks, I believe my version of g++ is 3.x. I also found an updated RealPlayer link (http://forms.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html?src=020504realhome_1_1_2_1_9_1) which might work. Will let youse know when I get home.

That would be Phoenix. that's the company. They are currently developing web browsers and other such services that would allow you to use the computer without loading the OS (ie DVD player).

I just downloaded firebird last night.

I just got to say that it ROCKS!!

Runs really well. I just don't see why they can't make it the official Mozilla Browser already!

Oh well,

Anyone happen to know when the .deb is going to be available for firefox? I've searched all around and can't seem to find a debian package for it anywhere.

hardcore
02-13-2004, 03:38 AM
No, but why not just download the pre comiled tar.gz file, extract it, untar it, and just launch it? Then once you get the .deb package, you can "install" it.

Yea that was plan B. I just try to use the latest deb files if they are available or will be shortly. I suffer from a disease.... it starts with an "L" and rhymes with "hazy":D

hmm...if they keep on changing the names like this, they should just settle on, once and for all, [the name] flamebait !

I was about to ask where I can get the RPM for it, but I searched for it and found it:

I can't find a way to open multiple instances of firefox, even with reading their docs, and searching their forums. I tried a few scripts that all seemed to use the -remote option. That either just opens a new tab in the SAME window, or pegs my cpu to 100%.
Back to Galeon/Epiphany until they get it right.
(bug report submitted)
(PS..unless you use the File-->New Window option..I guess that's too big an irritant for me. I just want to do: "firefox --someoptions URL" and have it work.)

For some reason, I can't get the Firefox icon to mount on my desktop as a link to the app in SUSE 9.0. It keeps changing back to the default KDE "gear" icon.

Anyone else having this problem?

I usually add Firebird/fox to my KDE menus and then right-click on the panel and select Add/Application Button and select Firefox. The Firefox icon displays fine.

I then created a link to a application on the desktop, selected the Firefox icon and it displays. Also SuSE 9.0 (Pro version).

I tried your method but I'm still getting the KDE gear icon. Everything goes like normal when selecting an icon for the desktop, but when I click ok it changes back to the gear.

I really have no idea unless something was not installed properly with your distro.

You could try copying the Firefox icons to your own home directory and then browse to those icons.

The trouble is when I find myself on another desktop, or using a different WM on another X-server. I have to go all the way back to where the original instance is located.
I'll look into the configure option,
Thanks!

try this script straight from my Gentoo install, you might have to make a few modifications, depending on your distro.

I wonder why I didn't get that script?!?
I just made my firefox icon do "sh /home/je_fro/bin/firefox.sh http://www.google.com/linux/" and now I'm good to go.
Thanks!
