i'm running fluxbox on slackware 9.1 and whenever i try to set the background this is the error i get:

bsetbg: /home/CxA/.fluxbox/bsetbg not found, creating...
bsetbg: checking for display... not found.
bsetbg: checking for Esetroot... not found.
bsetbg: checking for wmsetbg... not found.
bsetbg: checking for xv... not found.
bsetbg: checking for qiv... not found.
bsetbg: checking for xsri... not found.

bsetbg: error: couldn't find any suitable image applications in the system path!

it is suggested that you use qiv, xli (xsetbg), or xv.
you can obtain them at the following locations:

qiv: http://www.klografx.de/software/qiv.shtml
xli: http://pantransit.reptiles.org/prog/#xli
xv: http://www.trilon.com/xv/downloads.html

the above URLs are current as of 05/23/2000.
bash-2.05b$

i reinstalled fluxbox and still got that error, any ideas?

The problem is not with Fluxbox itself. You need to install one of the above mentioned programs that was missing. bsetbg simply searches for a suitable program on your system and uses that in order to set the background rather than setting it itself.

So in other words, you need to install one of the missing programs. I recommend Esetroot, which can handle the Fluxbox menu transparrancies. This one can be found in the eterm package. I'm not sure about the others though.

MartinB is right, you need one of those in order to be able to set a background.

Esetroot is a part of Eterm, just so you know.

Moving to Windows/Desktop Managers.
