Hello,
please do not kill me if this qustion has alsready been asked but i could not find an answer quickly.....

What I want to do is make a new shortcut to start an application, xterm in my case.
I know that such thing are done by metacity, the window manager. And that I can control this stuff somehow using gconf-editor: /apps/metacity...keybinding stuff....

Now my problem is I do not know what to do with those keybindings...........
HOW CAN I ADD A SHORTCUT eg.(Ctrl + ^) TO RUN xterm??

thx!

if you just want a desktop icon. try adding a launcher panel. or if there is already an xterm icon in one of your menus just right click and a menu should appear saying add this launcher to the panel

did you look in the gnome help files under customising keyboard shortucts then hot keys? to activate the menu options it talks about right click on the menu item you want to assigen to xterm and if that does'nt do it check this out http://www.linuxsa.org.au/mailing-list/2003-11/144.html

just run this command from a terminal in X.

gnome-keybinding-properties

if you don't have the app, then go to gnome.org and look it up in their project listing and install it.
