I have win 98 and rh 9.2 installed.

I have a 40gb drive. first partitition is 10GB for 98. second is 10 for red hat 9.2. third 20GB is for my media. When I first installed rh "automatic", it told me it didn't have enough space to install. I was installing it in my 2nd 10GB partition so not sure what was going on.

I thought it might not want a partition set up allready, so I deleted it. I now had one 10GB partition. red hat installed W/O any problems in the now second 30GB partition.

After a few days I decided to try Mandrake 9. (LOVE IT!!!) Had the same partition set up as before but with mandrake instead of rh.

After a week I decided that since rh9 has so much info (books, cd totorals, etc...) I decided to once again go back to windows 98 10GB, and red hat 9 10GB so I can really learn rh good. When I tried to install rh again, it said i didn't have enough space to install on the partition. I installed it on the new 34GB partition.

The "10GB" windows 98 partition ends up being 7.43GB.

Here's what I want to do.

Durning set up of rh, it has windows fat32 at the front. A partition at 7.3GB. I want to move the partition over to 10GB. Then install rh 9 on a 10GB (I was told it doesn't need that. How much is a good enough amount?) With a third AFTER the Linux Partition.

How do i do this? How can I get rh to install in automatic on a 2nd 10GB partition without telling me I don't have enough disc space to load red hat?

Why would "auto" make a mistake and can't do it and when I do it without knowing anything, it works (altough 30GB partition)?

P.S. Another problem I'm not getting is setting up the back or end of the rh partition.

Can anyone make sence of what i'm doing wrong?

Thanks very much. g-d 5.1

Last question first ... Not really.

I've heard that the Redhat 'automatic' install will take over the entire HD. I would suggest a 'custom' install so you have control over the partitioning and configuration process.

You want to resize the current partitions before installing Linux or after? The latest version of Partition Magic (8.0) has ext3 support or you can use GNU Parted (search freshmeat.net) or the partitioning tools included with Redhat.

Redhat does have documentation on their site on partitioning and setting up dualboot with Windows. Might help.

Thanks mdwatts, I wouldn't think of pm'ing you. If I did, others wouldn't learn form my posts. Thanks for replying.

Thanks for the links also. Will meditate on it and try to solve it.

Thanks, g-d 5.1.

I just printed out the links. When I leave school I'll go home and install again with my new info. It looks like this is what I've been looking for. It explanes it very nicely. Thanks again for the links, g-d 5.1.
