I just installed Mandrake 9, dual booting with W98 SE. I was pleased the installed was quite easy (with help from the links posted here). I reboot after successful install and I chose Mandrake. It goes through a number of checks then asks for a user name and password. I thought it was referring to my root a/c so I typed in coop...coop and then there was a drop down box for KDE...KNOME...(and a couple of others. It says password failed. I saw the username coop and unless I typed it wrong the password of coop too. I may have but highly doubt I typed the password wrong.

Any help would be appreciated as I am excited to give Mandrake a whirl.
(Go easy, a real newbie!)
Thanks.

Are you referring to the root account or your own username (coop)?

Either enter

root (for username)

and then

root's password

OR

the account you setup during installation.

coop (username)

coop (password)

Remember that Linux is case sensitive, so Coop is different from coop.

Unfortunately, nothing is working.
I tired root...root Root Root Coop Coop coop coop.

I looked back at the doc I had printed out while doing the install and it was at the Set root password screen. I know I typed Coop Coop cause that is what I used for all my login's. (ssshhh! Don't tell a soul).

When I do try to login, does it matter if I choose Knome, KDE and there is one that says linux fb.

Thanks.

I tried to enter single or 1 and root as a password but she wouldn't take. I continue to get Login fail

Just to confirm, I am at the screen that says...

Welcome to h00a0cc5fd9d3

Passord
Session Type...KDE
Gnome
IceWm
failsafe
default

Go! Clear Menu Shutdown

Does it matter which session type to choose? I have tried them all. On Shutdwon it says failsafe, floppy, linux, linux-fb and windows.

As in username Coop for root and then Coop for password?

The username is 'root' where root has a password such as coop.

The root username would not be coop as it's root.

Enter Username

root

Enter Password

coop

What password did you set for root during the install?

Mandrake's site should have documentation on recovering a lost root password or else reinstall and this take a careful note of the username's and passwords.
