Well, I went to the SuSe site and got the boot disk ISO, then I restarted my computer and went through all the menus until I got to a point where I am to select what tyoe if installation I wanted, when I picked a network installation it said "no network device found please load a network module first", and the thing is, I have a USB ehternet adapter by DtNet Technologies, I loaded some pegasus drivers for the adapter, and restarted the installation and got the same error.

Please help.......

Here are the G4L search results for 'ADM8511 USB To Fast Ethernet Adapter' (http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=ADM8511+USB+To+Fast+Ethernet+Adapter&btnG=Google+Search). See if any of them tell you exactly what drivers are required including USB specific modules.

Does the installer allow you to specify other modules to load or anything in the ftp documentation on loading additional modules on boot/install?

According to my modules.dep, pegasus at least requires the usbcore module to also be loaded.

yes, i loaded the usb core for the pegasus from the usb module section...but on the part where it wants me to load a network adapter driver, i didn't know which one to select.

I hope you know what I mean, I am a n00b to this stuff...

If pegasus.o is the correct module/driver for your ethernet adapter, wouldn't that be the module to use?

Is it being loaded or can you load it yourself?

I loaded some pegasus drivers for the adapter, and restarted the installation and got the same error.

Why did you restart the installation? Did you load the same driver after restarting?

Again after restarting your system/installation?

Does the ftp installation give you a console (commandline) where you can issue commands? Can you list the loaded modules with 'lsmod'?

Is USB configured correctly in your system bios?

I don't know if this will help, but it worked for me. I ran into the same error when I first tried to install SuSE 9.0. It was frustrating. Then I realized that I wasn't entering the right FTP address.

Try this:
1) Boot from CD. Press ESC at the prompt. It will ask if you want to leave the GUI. Say OK.

2) Type this at the boot prompt: linux install=ftp://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/suse/i386/9.0/

3) Push RETURN. The above address worked for me. The main address from suse.com did not work when I tried it.

4) Soon it will load a GUI. You should see "Press F2 for details." Push F2. If you follow along you will see that it sends a DHCP request to eth0. If it finds your NIC automatically, you will then see: "Loading data into ramdisk (46760 kB)......

The "Loading data" part should take a while. If it does, you know that you have successfully connected to the FTP server and can continue a normal installation.

Sorry if I'm being redundant. I'm new to Linux as well, and that error was frustrating me. Loading custom drivers didn't work for me because it wasn't connecting to the FTP server.

Let us know how you fare.

You would be advised to start a new thread in either Technical or Software on this problem as some may not bother to view this thread due to it's subject being on SuSE network installation issues.
