please disregard the post from this morning about "cannot boot". I figured it out. I had installed both hard drives on the same ide cable.
I have gotten into linux but I login to the command line inside of the x sytem. I read in a linux book I have, to type #startx under root. I did that and it says I have no windows. Can anyone help with this. I am lost.
sincerely,

you need to install a window manager, ie Gnome, KDE, Fluxbox, etc

You can download the source and install it, but I am guessing that you have just installed linux, I would reinstall and choose to install X along with a window manager like KDE or GNOME.

What distro is this?

And what install type did you pick during the installation?

Most distros default includes X/KDE/Gnome.

the distro is red hat 8. I got the computer to have linux on it with kde as well. I think in the process of configuring the screen to work for the x system it messed up the windows screen because I tryed to boot windos and it loading ... and the computer freezes or instead of getting a windows login screen I get a messed up screen of red, green and blue lines.

You will need to boot into text mode and then reconfigure X using the commandline xf86config or XF86Config (if I remember correctly).

The Redhat online documentation on their site has docs on booting into rescue/text modes and how to reconfigure X.
