Greetings Guru's -
I have been messing around with FC 1 on a:
PIII 500 Mhz
128 mb memory (Plan on increasing when I find the proper memory)
80 GB hard drive(don't think this matters but I am putting it in anyway)
Netgear 10/100 network card
PC.

Here is what I have been experiencing. I have had to reload the system twice and during the reloads, I will get a hang up and have to start all over again from scratch. Nine times outta ten, the second one goes all the way through. I have been choosing the Desktop load and then adding some extras for development etc. With the hang ups, I am thinking I need to just take the base desktop load and then go back and upgrade the system with the extra development apps. Any idea what is causing the hang-ups? Should I go to a different distro? Once it is installed, things work very well. I can get on the net etc.

Last night, I tried to update the Kernel from 2.4. to 2.6.1 and everything was going great untill I hit the grub.conf section. Now I am reloading for the third time. Also when messing with the 2.6.1 upgrade, I noticed several modules for items that I do not have on my PC. Is there a way to stream line the kernel to make it faster and only apply to what is on my box, or should I just leave it like it is and just deal with it.

Sorry for all the questions, but I am a windows user slowly making my way to Linux. I appreciate any input that you can share with me.

Thanks!!

What part of the installation does it hang? When it's installing packages? I've never seen the install flat out die without an error message of some sort...I HAVE seen it hang on some packages for an extremely long time (hours sometimes!)

Also, try installing in text mode...that might work better or display any errors

If you mess up the GRUB files later, you don't need to re-install. There are many methods to work around bad GRUB files and buggy kernels

I am going to have to take a look and see where it hangs and let you know. I will also try it in text mode and see what happens. Has anyone successfully upgraded their FC distro to the 2.6.1 kernel?

Did you have it run the CD check before the installation? Maybe there is something wrong with you media....

I'm not sure if your problem was like mine was when I tried installing it on one of my older pc's, but mine used to hang as well when installing. I got around it by just installing a minimum desktop enviroment at first and then adding packages on after the OS was installed. I didn't notice this problem on my new computer so I'm think it has something to do with the older hardware.

Then again I'm a problem magnet so that probley why mine messed up :D

-Thanks

Success!!! And it only took me three tries. The last try was in text form. I haven't gone back to add the other apps yet (honestly, I am almost too scared too). But, I am writing you from the Redhat box. Next up, I will be learning how to update the kernel. Wish me luck.

Thanks!
