I'm trying to install Mandrake 9.2. During the mandrake install, early on, shortly after the partition setup screen, it begins to do the real install and says "15 minutes remaining" and start copying files. First it got down to 10 minutes and then hung for a half hour there. Then I tried again and it got down to 12 and hung there.

This machine was a server with linux (rhat 7 maybe?) on it, then I wiped it clean and installed XP and now I want to dual boot Mandrake. Reason I say that is, it means the hardware is all linux friendly.

My machine:
Asus P2B-DS
dual PIII500 (haha, hey it was free)
1 gig of memory.
Maxtor 80 gig ATA drive (installing onto this)
Qunatum Atlas IV 9.1 gig scsi drive
100bt nic card
diamond viper 550 (riva tnt 1) video card
50x cd-rom

I thought maybe it could be a broken cd-rom (disc or drive) so in windows I tried copying everything on the disc to hd, and it all copied without throwing errors.

All I can think of is to switch to another console (only before it hangs) to see if you can spot any errors messages.

ctrl-alt-f1 - f6

or

alt-f1 -f6

Or type disabling i.e. power management in the bios or trying some of the boot/install options that Mandrake should list in the documentation on their site.

Have you tried different install options such as 'safe settings' etc.?

thanks for being the only one to respond,

Are you ready for this?

My problem was that my IDE drive was set to be slave, without a master.

Now you would think that either it would just not work at all, or work fine. I was able to install XP like that with no problems whatsoever. Only when I was installing Adobe CS did I start to have problems. On top of that, I was able to boot off the mandrake cd and get that far in the installation three times. What is this "partially working" nonsense!!

I changed it to master and now everything works fine. I have masses of other problems now that it's installed...

thanks

Always glad to try to help and to see it was only something simple as not having the jumpers set correctly.

Good luck and enjoy !!

I was in a six hour (no kidding) company meeting or I would have also responded. Anyway, I remember your earlier posts Bog, about your trepidation with installing Linux. Well, YOU'RE HERE!!! You have now begun a wonderful, albeit sometimes difficult journey of learning. Never be afraid to ask questions but learn the joy of doing research. I taught myself Linux, with much help, in this manner, beginning eight years ago. Trust me, I am still learning! Welcome to Linux!
