So, my wife calls me into the room last night to see the Linux commercial she's been talking about. It wasn't half bad but doesn't really say anything important IMHO. Kind of sci-fi like... anyways what impact is this going to have on the Linux community? More exposure? Increased usage for server applications? Others?

If you're referring to the one with the child, I think it's ok. The one I really love is the "who stole the servers" commercial. In the end, all the old servers were replaced with one IBM server running Linux. I think what the most significant message these commercials send is Linux can save you time, money and effort. Bottom line: Linux has been validated by IBM and it's very hard for people in the corporate world to simply pass it off as a hacker OS.

I was referring to the one with the child... haven't seen the other one but it sounds cool. I agree that IBM embracing Linux sort of validates its use amongst the corporate world. I guess it also raises general awareness (at least of the name) to "regular" folks as well.

You should also read the parody of the advert over at http://www.userfriendly.org
<edit>Oh, and if you really want one of the ads (like the missing server one) send me a PM, and I'll mail it on to you - one of the benefits of working for IBM ;) </edit>

I brought this thread back to life because of the new IBM Linux ads on our site here. MUCH nicer than those "microsoft is the best ever" commercials. Thank you to Brian Proffit or whoever! Thank you! :)

What about the soundtrack found at IBM? It has 5 tracks. Kinda weird like you said--sci fi like.

You can find a version of the IBM ad by clicking on the banners or go to

The ad campaign is not designed to inform people about Linux, but to make people curious, get people talking, and give Linux a slick corporate image. If I remember, the ad refers people to IBM's website, which has long contained a wealth of information about Linux, including a library of tutorials, even training for the LPI exam. In this respect, I think the ad hits a home run. This is going to be the most remembered IT commercial since Apple's "Introducing Macintosh" ad of 20 years ago... (which I keep hearing about, but, unfortunately, never saw.)

Cool commercial, no doubt, and interesting, but the kid bears a bit of a resemblance to the "Children of the Damned" cast....hordes of children with Linux superpowers will rule us one day....

Could you send me a pSeries Model 650? The '7038-6M2-401M' model will do.
