Hello my name is Royous and I have recently started to use Red Hat Linux 9.0. I am trying to get my winmodem that I installed in my computer to work. Using the cat /proc/pci I find that the VENDOR_ID:DEVICE_ID is 11c1:048c. My modem's manufacuturer is Hi-Val but is made by Lucent or Agere Systems. When I look this ID up in the internet, several websites have info which says that the particular ID is a Lucent AMR modem. The websites I have seen tell me that there is no support for AMR modems. What can I do about this? How can I get around this? Can I find other drivers that will help get my modem working?

Thanks

Your solution is simple. Get rid of the AMR modem and buy something like this (http://www.usr.com/products/home/home-product.asp?sku=USR5610B).

Their Linux install reference is included in this pdf (http://www.usr.com/support/s-modem/s-modem-docs/5610b-install.pdf).

Sure that's one solution. Another, if you're short up on money, is to buy a winmodem that you know has support. For example, I'm using a "Conexant SoftK56 Data Fax Voice Speakerphone" and then download the last free of charge linux drivers (the companies has made it so you have to pay if you want the latest version - either that or use the available 14.4K free edition) from http://www.int21.de/conexant/ So in the end, if you're short up for money, but a winmodem that has linux support (will probably cost you about $10 or so). Otherwise, if you have money, I would recommend that you buy a real modem.
