Well, it appears that I have my HP deskjet 712c all set up, the foomatic and cups software all installed, yet I cant get this darn thing to print on slackware 9.1. I request a test page to be printed on my configured printer (through localhost:631) and it says that my 'job has been completed', yet my printer does nothing. Is there any thing that I am missing here that is causing this guy not to print when asked to? Or any more software that's required, possibly? Thanks for any help you guys have here!

Hi

Sorry I can't help you as I have a similar problem.

I've configured my printer to print via Cups, and I got it working when using Konq. But when I try to print using Moz or OO, I get nothing.

I'm also having trouble printing when using the command line.

When I type lpr <filename>.txt, I get the following message:

Status Information, attempt 1 of 3:
sending job '********'+587' to lp1@localhost
connecting to 'localhost', attempt 1
cannot open connection to localhost - No such file or directory
Make sure the remote host supports the LPD protocol
and accepts connections from this host and from non-privileged (>1023) ports
Waiting 10 seconds before retry

Can anybody tell me what this means, and how to get the printer to work.

Thanks.

Hey Speed, if you are using Cups that came with Slack, go to the Cups site and D/L the source file.

Install and config your printer again.

I just did that, and everything is working fine now.:) :) :) :) :)

Yeah, I am using the source file, I use as few distro-packaged files as possible, so that's not it... any other ideas??

Speed,

If you are installing using Cups at the GUI and clicking the test button produces no output, try choosing a different driver.

I dont know, there's really no drivers which would make much sense to substitute for the one I am currencly using... any comments?

well speedobeast,

i can't help, but i'm having the same problem too...

presuming you've downloaded the latest hpijs 1.5?

yes indeed, so have i - and it *doesn't work*!!!!!

so i tried an earlier version, and........ i won't go into detail, but suffice to say, i'm heartily pee'd off with the whole thing - it's a nightmare....

soory i can't be any more constructive, but i feel like hurling the computer through the window at the moment (oh, and it's my dad's imac running yellow dog 2.3 - i use an x86 machine running suse 8.2 - bliss)

take care....

Well, I got a tad farther on this thing now; I used my 2.6 slackware-compiled kernel, and used that guy on my new mandrake installation (trying to troubleshoot my printing probs) and cups said something about not having all of my kernel options enabled. Exactly WHAT kernel options do I need to have enabled to print with my parallel-port-based printer? I think that this, for some reason, may be my problem.. a list of needed options here would be huge!

This is my 2.6 kernel with a HP DeskJet 3820 printer using the parallel port.
