Ok here's the deal, if any of you have read my other posts about this laptop I have you will know that under RedHat 7.2(neither 8 nor 9 even wanted to load) I couldn't get X to load. Also you will know that Damn Small Linux which is based off of Knoppix finds and and lets me configure video perfectly using xvesa. Now I have DSL on the laptop now, but I would really prefer RedHat. Is there a way to find out how X is configured in DSL and use the same information on RedHat? I know DSL is Debian based, but can they share the module or whatever it is that is making DSL use X perfectly? I have no clue what kind of video card is in this laptop. It's a CTX Ezbook 700G. I did a search for it on google but couldn't find much of anything but parts.

You could just copy your /etc/X11/XF86Config file to a floppy, and then once you installed Red Hat, just copy that file to /etc/X11, and then restart X.

If all of the same modules and libs are installed, there shouldn't be any reason why it wouldn't work...

Sorry if I sound like a noob. I usually don't have to mess with X configs or anything. So here is the XF86Config file from DSL. Will this stuff work straight over to RedHat? I just want to make sure first cause I'll have to reformat the laptop again.

The syntax for both systems are the same as far as the XF86Config files are concerned. It should go over without any problem.

Alright, I finally had some time to work on this darn laptop again. So When I installed RedHat I skipped the X config stuff. Then I copied the XF86Config file over from DSL. I typed startx and this is what it gave me:

execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 2):
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to the X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

Is that because I did not configure X when I installed RH? When I type whereis xinit it gives me:
xinit: /usr/X11R6/bin/xinit /usr/bin/X11/xinit

Ok, I took a look at the config file to see if it was trying to located xinit as being elsewhere, and it was not. But I did find out that DSL is hiding it's real config file somewhere and the one I copied is not the correct one. So if anyone knows where to find it, or how I can fix my problem......

dear ben

in dsl launch xfree then kill it with a classic ctrl alt bkspc

look near the top and it will show the location of the xf86config file it used to launch xfree

Another CTX model listed at Linux-on-Laptops uses a Neomagic video card. Check to see what you have with the following command.

/sbin/lspci
