MEPIS (http://www.mepis.org) has better hardware detection than Mandrake. It's just as easy to install and it has apt-get. I switched to it from Mandrake a couple weeks ago and strongly recommend it.

Many cheap ethernet cards use the Realtek 8139 chipset (rtl8139).
I have two of them and never had a problem with any Linux Distro.

Chris, how do you install them, just using the network wizard?
