I tried to install this Synaptic but I didnt find a rpm for Red-Hat :rolleyes:

well... meanwhile I will do the old fashioned way :
# rpm -qa

I tryed to install it, but it requires a lot of dependencies.. so I tried to install the dependencies, and they request other dependecies.. and so on...
until I need some files which I didnt find or didnt work.... :mad:

if you are running redhat
http://shrike.freshrpms.net/
download apt and apt-devel
install them
once installed su root and type:
apt-get update
then
apt-get install synaptic

done.

the freshrpms redhat 9 repository has not been updated in some time
so you may wish to add
the fedora legacy repositories to your repositry list in synaptic.
rpm http://download.fedora.us/fedora redhat/9/i386 os updates stable
rpm-src http://download.fedora.us/fedora redhat/9/i386 os updates stable

rpm -i apt-0.5.5cnc6-fr1.i386.rpm

it returns :

what distro you running?
and it apears that you need to install rpmdb.
you can find this with the deps on your install cds

RPM find is one of the most valuable resources with RPMs ;)

You need the following RPMs installed before you can install APT

elfutils-libelf
rpm-4.2

Once those are on, you can install APT..."apt-get update", "apt-get install synaptic"

Of course versions are important with APT, what version of Red Hat are you using?

I am using red-hat 8.0

I tryed to install elfutils-libelf and rpm-4.2, elfutils-libelf installs with no problems, but when I tryed to install rpm-4.2 :

# rpm -i rpm-4.2-0.69.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:

So.. I tryed to install the dependencies and it returns :

# rpm -i popt-1.8-0.69.i386.rpm

It's oftten a good idea to do rpm -Uvh. This Upgrades the package in question. Note that there is no problem if the package is not installed, it just installs it. If it IS installed, the old one is replaced by the new one.

But i still had problems :

Maybe I should format my cpu and install all again... (with red-hat 9) :(

Thankfully, newer versions of RPM can "look ahead" at what's in a directory, and "see" that yes, this upgrade will break program X, but, then, we have a new program X we are about to install, so it's going to be OK. Try making a folder putting both popt and rpm in it, and see if you can do something like, rpm -Uvh *.rpm. I have rpm 4.2 and it handles this kind of thing perfectly.

I would suggest getting packages that were made for you distro if possible, if you are trying to install a package for RH 9 on 8...there will be lots of these errors

try getting your packages from
http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/redhat/8.0/

I wasnt find the apt and atp-devel rpm for rh8.0 just for 9..

now I could installed synaptic with no problems!! :D
