ArlinOrlando 12-26-2003, 01:11 PM I am using red-hat 8.0 I tryed to install elfutils-libelf and rpm-4.2, elfutils-libelf installs with no problems, but when I tryed to install rpm-4.2 : # rpm -i rpm-4.2-0.69.i386.rpm error: Failed dependencies: popt = 1.8 is needed by rpm-4.2-0.69 So.. I tryed to install the dependencies and it returns : # rpm -i popt-1.8-0.69.i386.rpm file /usr/include/popt.h from install of popt-1.8-0.69 conflicts with file from package popt-1.7-1.06 file /usr/lib/libpopt.a from install of popt-1.8-0.69 conflicts with file from package popt-1.7-1.06 file /usr/lib/libpopt.la from install of popt-1.8-0.69 conflicts with file from package popt-1.7-1.06 file /usr/lib/libpopt.so.0.0.0 from install of popt-1.8-0.69 conflicts with file from package popt-1.7-1.06 file /usr/share/man/man3/popt.3.gz from install of popt-1.8-0.69 conflicts with file from package popt-1.7-1.06 well.. so i tryed to unistall popt-1.7-1.06 to be able to install popt1.8-0.69 but I still got this problems: # rpm -e popt-1.7-1.06 error: Failed dependencies: libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) newt-0.51.0-1 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) ORBit2-2.4.1-1 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) authconfig-4.2.12-3 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) libuser-0.51.1-2 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) bonobo-activation-1.0.3-2 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) GConf2-1.2.1-3 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) rpm404-python-4.0.4-8x.27 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) libgnome-2.0.2-5 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) libgnomeui-2.0.3-3 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) kbdconfig-1.9.16-1 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) kudzu-0.99.69-1 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) logrotate-3.6.5-2 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) mouseconfig-4.26-1 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) ntsysv-1.3.6-3 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) passwd-0.67-3 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) rpm-4.1-1.06 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) rpm-python-4.1-1.06 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) rsync-2.5.5-1 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) timeconfig-3.2.9-1 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) chkfontpath-1.9.6-3 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) desktop-file-utils-0.3-3 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) xsri-2.1.0-3 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) gdm-2.4.0.7-13 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) Xtest-2.0-1 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) tux-2.2.7-3 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) lokkit-0.50-21.8.0 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) net-snmp-5.0.6-8.80.2 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) samba-2.2.7-5.8.0 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) samba-client-2.2.7-5.8.0 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) samba-common-2.2.7-5.8.0 libpopt.so.0 is needed by (installed) rpm-build-4.1-1.06 popt = 1.7 is needed by (installed) rpm-4.1-1.06 popt >= 1.5 is needed by (installed) librsvg2-2.0.1-1 posterboy 12-26-2003, 01:34 PM It's oftten a good idea to do rpm -Uvh. This Upgrades the package in question. Note that there is no problem if the package is not installed, it just installs it. If it IS installed, the old one is replaced by the new one. ArlinOrlando 12-26-2003, 02:17 PM humm.. thanks for the rpm -Uvh tip :D But i still had problems : # rpm -Uvh popt-1.8-0.69.i386.rpm error: Failed dependencies: popt = 1.7 is needed by (installed) rpm-4.1-1.06 Maybe I should format my cpu and install all again... (with red-hat 9) :( posterboy 12-26-2003, 05:14 PM Thankfully, newer versions of RPM can "look ahead" at what's in a directory, and "see" that yes, this upgrade will break program X, but, then, we have a new program X we are about to install, so it's going to be OK. Try making a folder putting both popt and rpm in it, and see if you can do something like, rpm -Uvh *.rpm. I have rpm 4.2 and it handles this kind of thing perfectly. Icarus 12-27-2003, 04:14 AM I would suggest getting packages that were made for you distro if possible, if you are trying to install a package for RH 9 on 8...there will be lots of these errors try getting your packages from http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/redhat/8.0/ ArlinOrlando 12-27-2003, 02:52 PM Originally posted by posterboy I would suggest getting packages that were made for you distro if possible, if you are trying to install a package for RH 9 on 8...there will be lots of these errors try getting your packages from http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/redhat/8.0/ Thanks for the link mahdi!!
