802.11a based devices support higher bitrates (30-50 Mbps). Be aware that there is no driver support for 802.11a devices under Linux, FreeBSD and other Open Source operating systems (although DLink is rumoured to have drivers, but no one really knows).

I read this here:

The BC Wireless project is a volunteer, grassroots organization that focuses on building and promoting Community based Networking within the province of British Columbia.

Is this true as of today...

Isn't that 802.11g?

802.11a was something around 1 megabit. 802.11b is around 11 megabits. 802.11g is supposed to get up to 54 megabits.

The linuxant driver wrapper now supports the Rockwell 100 Mbs wireless cards, and most of the "A" cards.
Linuxant (http://www.linuxant.com/company/press_dldrusr.php)

I wish I had a 100 Mbs internet access to take advantage of that. Go Linuxant, yes they're bad! :)
