Color Console / Terminal In Debian!!!

I just finished configuring my Debian system but I cannot get it to display in color, ie color coding directories and the prompt. like doing ls --color. How can I make it so the prompt and directories/files are colored?

look in your ~/.bashrc file and uncommit the line after it says "enable color support of ls and also add handy aliases"
