Since it is the end of the old year, the beginning of the new year is almost here; and for Christians it is Christmas, for Jews it Hanukah, and I'm not sure about other religions, customs, beliefs, or cultural celebrations at this time of the year;

A Linux Wish List

1. More users (willing to read first, ask second !)
2. 2.8 Kernel by the end of the year ( this IS a wish list!)
3. Steady supply of new distros
4. Mo' ram fo mah new bad a** mojo machine Bon Bon and I are building- right now we've found 12 sticks in the dumpster behind Compusa.
5. I wish all the mods and posters on JustLinux to have a good year and get what they need and not necessarily what they want.
6. And Bon Bon says " May all your circuits be complete and your transformers not hum too loud".

I wish for:
1. World Peace
2. Mutual love and respect
3. Honest government
4. Free trade
5. Kittens
6. Puppies

On second thought, screw all that stuff. Just gimme Linux and puter parts.
Oh, and maybe a nice girlfrind for Bon Bon. He's too much of a stud to be without one.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter. But if we're not careful this is going to get real off topic (as in "not technology related") real fast, so why don't we keep it to technology wish lists?

:)

Mine:

(1) A reasonably secure wireless network at work (i.e. WPA and 802.1x / Radius, along with getting rid of all those problematic Trakker wireless clients that don't support WPA or 802.1x). WEP isn't going to cut it for much longer.

(2) Work could start on 2.7 at least. There was a rumor a while back about 2.7 being the kernel that finally got its act together with regard to the userspace headers (the ones in /usr/include/{linux,asm} that are used for userspace programs) being properly separated from the internal kernel headers that are used to compile kernel modules and glibc. IIRC someone suggested an IDL generating the headers, or something. Anyway, any separation would be better than what we have now, since building userspace with headers from 2.6.0-testX causes some severe breakage.

(3) Doom 3. 'Nuff said. :D

Until I get my system so I can run linux (long story short lil bro messed with the computer that we dual booted) I would like a Microsoft OS that duznt suck. but thats a little too much from one of the, if not the most, wealthyest person in the world. Hey a kid can wish. Also computer parts/ computers (old, new, p.o.s.) I like the idea of kernel 2.8.0 and some books on linux so I dont have to print off hundreds of pages so I can actualy learn more about linux and how it works.

No wish list for Linux....well...maybe I could go for full UDF R/W support, but I'm patient.

I'd really like Santa to drop a couple more LDC monitors (19"-ers, please!) on my desk, to put my multi-head card to good use.

Hmmm does LFS have you link /usr/include/{linux,asm} to /usr/src/linux/include/{linux,asm}? If so that is very old school, hell debian has seperated /usr/include/{linux,asm} from the kernel source sence around '97 (I believe I read that RH resentlly followed suit). If your distro does the evil simlink thing then never change the /usr/src/linux link that points to /usr/src/linux-<original_kernel_version> (your risking the wrath of Linus if you do so ;) ).

They do copy the headers from whatever the currently used kernel is, though. Then they build glibc against those headers, and leave them in place for the rest of userspace also.

The problem with 2.6 is, if you copy its headers and build glibc against them, userspace tools won't build properly. glibc will, but a lot of other stuff won't.

This is mostly because of the kernel mantra that "nothing in userspace should ever include kernel headers". Which is OK, until you realize that stuff that talks to the kernel needs those headers so it knows what kind of data structures the kernel is looking for...

From E.C. Guy:
10. all spammers to contract the new flu and die a horrible death
Almost as good, I read where Microsoft and the AG of New York were taking some of the top ones to court to "basically put them out of business". I hope the "legal" flu is as contagious as the medical kind.
