Hello,
Out of curiosity, I searched this board for postings containing the term hack, or hacking... I read alot of posts from people who had thought they had been hacked, so far, I havent yet read one which has been confirmed as an actual hacker attack.
This thread is for those of you who HAVE in actual fact, been hacked. Please post your stories, I would be very interested to know about them.

It's a short story. Maybe 2 years ago, I was fooling around with DNS. It had some well-known security issues at that time. A white-hat cracked BIND, and got root. He left me a nice text note in /root directory, and assured me he had done nothing untoward, but that he certainly could have. I upgraded BIND, and continued to use the system, watching with great care for "things" going on. I never saw any.

...you really show your ignorance using the term "hacked" or "hacker" in a negative way.....you should look those terms up and use them properly before you offend somebody.

I've seen numerous script kiddie attempts to deface one of my websites, but nothing major.

Who cares, really. I know people really get touchy on this subject, but does anyone outside the tech/geek world really take these terms to heart or think for more than one mili-second about them? Has anyone ever, at a coctail party, mentioned that they were recently "hacking" a program and been socially black-balled? Has this so-called misuse of termonology ever caused the FBI to unjustly search someone's house or arrest them? Should we call the anti-defimation league?
Hacking is simply a term that has both negative and positive connotations, for whatever breif historical reasons. If I said a mass murderer "butchered" twenty seven people with a hatchet, should I then expect the local Polish and German butchers to flame me for defaming and misusing the name of their profession?
Just my 2 cents.

I agree. I'm sure most people here can tell the difference when using the term "hacker" (whether or not the term is being used in a positive or negative way). Foolishness.
