ok so my new redhat 9.0 system didnt ask me whether i want to boot into X windows or console, it automatically sets the machine to boot into X. it has that login program GDM or whatever it is called..

i personally like to boot to console and start X on my own when i need it.

how do i change it???

You need to alter the initdefault setting - I think it is in /etc/inittab, IIRC.

Do a search on the forum on initdefault and you're bound to find some full details.

Following on from mrben, the file is indeed /etc/inittab and in Slackware, runlevel 3 is used for the console, 4 is used for X, although I think it's 5 in Mandy and RedHat...

Change the line (very near the top, possibly the first line) that says "DO NOT SET THIS IS RUNLEVEL 0 OR 6" to runlevel 3 and away you go.
