I'm downloading army of one for linux. The file name has a .gz file extension. Is gunzip what I use to start installing it, or is it tar. If it is gunzip what argument do I use to decompress the file. I think it's -d, but I'm not sure. Please help.

I never heard of "Army of one" before, unless you mean America's Army...even then that should be a .bin file ~600MB in size :)
If it's something else, here's a quick tar gunzip tutoral
filename.gz = gunzip filename.gz
filename.tar = tar xvf filename.tar
filename.tar.gz = tar zxvf filename.tar.gz

run "gunzip file_name.gz" where file_name is the actual name of the file. That will uncompress the file.
