I'm installing (trying) on a Duron 750, 512megs ram...

I tried to install from Stage1 and it got a error and locked up. It looked something like this, just a different file: (Bare in mind I had to write this out!)

bzip2: I/O or other error, bailing out. Possible reason follows.
bzip2: Broken Pipe
Input file = /usr/portage/distfiles/binutils-2.14.90.0.6.tar.bz2, output file = (stdout)

/usr/sbin/ebuild.sh: line 1325: 17703 Exit 1
<1>Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer difference at virtual address 000000004

pde (BUNCH OF NUMBERS)
cpu 0
eip #'s
eflags #'s
eax #'s
esi #'s (I didn't write down all the numbers!)
ds #'s
stack #'s
call trace #'s
code #'s

Then it locked the shell.

So, I thought I'd do a stage2 install instead, I got this error

!!! Error: dev-libs/openssl-0.9.6k failed
!!! Function src-compile, line 67, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

So then I did a 'emerge openssl'
It worked so I did a 'emerge system' and started going again, then I got a error message very close to the first one. Something about bzip2... what am I doing wrong here? This worked perfect on my old PII 266! I didn't touch anything in make.conf, I tried resetting my bios to factory settings, I'm not overclocked and my memory tested ok. I'm at a total loss now...

Thanks! Walter

Could your CD be busted?

Well, the packages I'm installing are downloaded, so I don't think it would affect it...

Do the MD5s match on against those posted on the download server?

When it does the check after downloading it says they are ok... I've tried doing a 'emerge -f system' just to watch them all download. I've tried installing about 5 times now. I keep getting the same errors but on all different packages each time. I checked the temp of my cpu and it was well within normal ranges. Maybe I'll try re-burning the cd... Any other ideas?
Maybe errors on my HD? How can I check that?

It's just weird, it went so smooth on my other machine... so I though I'd install it on my m$ machine. I wiped out windows, maybe M$ is watching me :)
