If you read the front page of JustLinux.com, there is the news ticker at the bottom of the page. This issue was listed there yesturday if not earlier.

It was fixed earlier, the developers just didn't realize that it could lead to a root exploit... Debian-announce has a bit of info on it, since their servers were the ones that got exploited by it...

Can this only be used to crack a server? Or desktops as well?

it can be used to crack any system where the cracker can get local access.
