Hi,
I just downloaded the RedHat 8.0, but during installation the whole screen turns blank, then I tried the text mode to install the linux, and I finally found out the where the problem lies... it's because it doesn't support my monitor, I search all over the monitor list, but none match my one --> LG Studioworks 700S. It can recognize my video adapter, so there's nothing wrong with the video adapter. Does anyone know what else I can do????? I really want to install linux but I don't want to buy a new monitor...

Do the text mode install, then configure X manually using xf86config - you will be able to enter the proper settings for your monitor there.

as long as you know the refresh rates of your monitor, then it is supported. XFree doesn't use any special drivers for monitors, it only needs the correct horiz/vert refresh rates.

if red hat won't set the horiz/vert refresh rates properly when it tries to install in graphics mode then there may be a way to pass the settings to the installer before it attempts to go into graphics mode (maybe a red hat user will see this and post a way - i don't use red hat so i don't know for sure if it can do this or not), OR you could install it in text mode and then set up X using the horiz/vert refresh rates of your monitor from the vendor's web site (LG).

Try running the installer in low resolution

linux lowres at the boot prompt

oh! Great thx a lot! But I am a linux dummy, I've just install the red hat 8 through the text mode, but how may I configure the monitor resolution? Also, I think the installation (in text mode) was not complete coz during the monitor testing stage the whole screen turns blank and I couldn't do any thing other than restart it, is that alright? Also, how can I login to the GUI through the text login? I typed the username and password but I couldn't go into the GUI like KDE.... Can anyone help pls, I really want to install linux by this week.... Thanks.

startx will start the GUI (if installed)

You might want to search for your monitor around www.google.com/linux to get the proper refresh rates

typing setup at the command line will bring you to a curses gui (characture based) and you should be able to setup your video there

Hi,
I've just tried the xf86config command, and run through the x-configuration. And I tried to set to different vert/hori refresh rate, but none works, everytime I typed startx, the whole screen turns blank. I've found out the refresh rate in the manual--> it's the LG studioworks 700S (Hori= 30-70, Vert = 50-160) and resolution is 1024*768@85Hz
Also, I've tried to set the color to 16 colors, however I received an error:
"Fatal server error:
no screens found"
And
"XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (o know processed) with 0 events remaining."

When I set the color to 256, and press startx, the whole screen just turns blank forever.... PLS HELP!!!!
