I'm at my wit's end here; I can NOT figure out what the heck is going on with this modem. I'm not sure if I've asked this here but ANY help is greatly appreciated.

Before I go any further, I want to point out that this exact same thing occurs with ANY modem I put in the machine (or attach to it.) I've received this same response I am about to describe with a Lucent Modem (with and without a Linuxant driver), an external Creative Modem Blaster Flash 56K, and an internal US Robotics 5610B modem. I thought that might help for anyone who's reading this.

I recently loaded Suse 9.0 Pro on my computer. When I start up KPPP, I ensure that I select the port (ttyS0) that the modem is found at. When I run a 'cat /proc/pci' the modem is easily found at the proper I/O port (I wanna say it is 0xfc07) and IRQ (9). If I run a 'setserial -bg /dev/ttyS0' it returns that the modem there is a 16550A.

I configure KPPP any way I want to, and no matter how the modem is found (via the "Modem Query" button), it will query the ATI's, and then return absolutely NOTHING in the ATI lines. Not a darn thing. If I attempt to connect, it queries the modem, says "Modem Ready" and then I see "Initializing Modem", where the expect response is 'OK.' And that's it. It just sits there.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Is the Creative external modem connected to serial port or usb? I'm a newbie but when I was having modem and network problems, I was advised that a serial port modem would just about jump on the WEB. They were right, thank, God. I bought a Cendyne for about $16 at www.glob2000.com for what it's worth. Good luck
