Buffer underrunning a plextor burnproof drive? wtf?

Went to go burn a CD today using cd record (do loop of *.mp3s in a dir, 1 cds worth), and I get a buffer underrun and create a coaster. No idea why. I wasn't overloading the system or anything. I've used cdrecord on previous installs without a problem, no idea why it's breaking here.

Can cdrecord do mp3 decoding?

Every time I've used it to burn audio CDs (which hasn't been often), I've converted to wav with mpg123 or ogg123 before burning. Not sure if that helps or not, though...

Is SCSI emulation working OK? Anything in the system logs?

plextor burner, gentoo.

I use a do loop to mp3 each file to -cdr and pipe it to cdrecord, then fix it at the end (works pretty well).

AMD 1800+ 256mb ram. Worked fine before, doesn't seem to work right on gentoo.
