Does anyone here use gentoo? I wanted to install gentoo and already downloaded the athlon XP iso files. I want to know how to do a stage 3 install and I want the gaming sources installed also. I wanted to know if I should need any advice before starting the install. I appriciate all your help guys. I am really looking forward to this gentoo install and getting away from those damn rpm dependancies. Thanks again guys. LaTeR:)

There's a lot of gentoo users here. I suggest you just read through the install manual at www.gentoo.org once or twice before you go ahead. Good luck.

I've done so and it seems that a stage 3 install would be the best for me. I was wondering if there was anything else I need to know or any advice I should get before installing. :)

Have you heard / considered using knoppix as a medium to install gentoo? It's not that difficult, plus its documented on as well. - here's a link - (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml) . It's a nice method in that it gives access to the rest of the machine during the install.

I dual boot Mandrake and Gentoo 1.4. I found it much easier to have one /boot partition and share between the two. Make sure the kernels have different names and such.

I also found it easier to boot from the CD and do the install. I have done it both ways.

Compile your own kernel. Go through each section one by one and add what you know you will need. Also make sure to enable ppp. If you have dial-up or PPPoE you will need that. Also under charachter devices there are the serial ports and parallel ports if you use them.

Do not add kdm or gdm to default or the NVIDIA kernel until you know you are stable and such. If you have trouble it only makes it worse. For the kdm or gdm, just login as root and type in kdm or gdm and it will start. That takes the place of startx once the xf86config file is setup.

Oh, grub for the bootloader. I never could get lilo to work right. It is really easy to hit e and edit grub instead of booting to another distro and changing and running lilo.

My two cents worth. You asked for it.

my suggestion, avoid the "genkernel" app when you are installing and roll your own kernel instead unless you want a bloated and crappy kernel.

my other suggestion is ot read the install document _prior_ to starting the install, ask any questions on points you don't understand _before_ you start the install, and finally print a copy of the install document _before_ you install and reread it one last time before starting the install and then refer to the install document during the entire install. :D

PS: the GRUB example in the install document is _wrong_ if you have a separate boot partition (which is the recommended partitioning scheme).

<edit>just reread your pst, i don't recommend the Gaming Sources, they suck - i have heard many people complaining about them. use ck-sources or wolk-sources if you can.</edit>
