External USR 56k modem, Lycoris Update 3 (build 142), Acer V66XA (Acer Aspire, IBM Aptiva), PII 350.

Using the KDE connection module, I get an error msg: "The modem is busy." The modem works fine in 98SE. I've tried it with the standard Windows dip switch settings and the settings suggested on the USR website for Unix with the same result.

I did a search of the forums for "USR external modem" and found nothing specific to my problem. But I have to say that cspan's 6 page and 85 post thread is rather daunting. There was no happy ending, at least posted, for his effort with a USR 33.6 external.

I've downloaded many Linux distros, successfully installed several times, but never taken the last step of getting a modem configured. Now I have the all-important external hardware modem and this is make or break time for me with Linux. I must mention that Lycoris installed faster and easier than anything I've used before -- so smooth. I'd heartily recommend it to another newbie.

Problem solved! I used the help file for modems, for KPPP, and in the setup mode I found more entries to make. Still returned the "Sorry, the modem is busy" msg.
I then changed dev/modem and started down the list of serial ports and hit the jackpot on the second or third one.
This is my first time on the internet on Linux, after all these years!
Now I have three questions:
How do I shrink Mozilla down to one thin line at the top like I can with IE?
Is there an equivalent to Adshield in Linux that will get rid of banner ads?
What's a good download manager for Linux?

Since I should be posting these questions in a software forum, I guess I'll go do that.

Thanks for those help files.

Congrats :)
About your questions.
>> How do I shrink Mozilla down to one thin line at the top like I can with IE?
It depend on the window manager you are using, usually double-clicking the window title will do that.
>> Is there an equivalent to Adshield in Linux that will get rid of banner ads?
If you use Mozilla, the is no need to install a third-party software, it has it's own pop-up blocker (hint: Edit->Prefereces->Advances->Scripts & Windows)
>> What's a good download manager for Linux?
wget (hint: man wget)
