I just installed slackware 9.1 on my laptop and everything works great except for 2 little problems.

the first problem is my sound does not work. i read many posts on this forum and i still cannot get the sound to work. (cirrus logic crystal cs4281)

i can run alsamixer and turn up the volume to 100%, i also unmute everything with M key. nothing!

lsmod shows the card, snd-cs4281
lspci card shows up, soundcore shows up.

ALSA loads at boot.

anyone have any suggestion?

the second problem is a boot error. it shows up everytime i boot slack. this is the message:

insmod: insmod: insmod cs462x failed
insmod: insmod: /lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/char/joystick/cs461x.o.gz failed

i have no idea how to turn this message off. i don't have a joystick. any one know what i should do to remove thie error message?

could the first problem be anyway related to the second problem?

As for the no sound thing, what happens when you try to play a sound?
Does it look like it's playing, and you don't get any sound or is there an error message?

If it looks like it's playing, (and please don't take offense at this question) but are your speakers turned on and volumes on the speakers turned up?
Are the speakers plugged into the right plug on sound card?

I know that if this sounds idiotic, but I've heard many a story where the software was troubleshot for hours and hours and it turned out that the speakers were plugged into the modem rather than the sound card.

i am not familar with slackware...but is there a modules.autoload file u can remove that module reference from? should clear up that message

also on my version of linux there is a program called sndconfig that does some diagnostics..i would check to make sure there are no IRQ conflicts...dma issues..etc....if problems persist visit opensound.com and see if they have a driver there.

thanks for your replies!

btw, the soundcard is onboard and i tried it with the built-in laptop speakers and i also plugged in external speakers.

i was reading messages on the web and found out that there may be a problem with the slackware 2.4.22 kernel/ALSA not working with some soundcards. so i downloaded slackware 9.0 and installed it. it has 2.4.20 kernel and now my soundcard is working, and it sounds fairly clear. i don't think it has ALSA because alsamixer doesn't work. but i could be wrong.

i still have the insmod error as mentioned earlier and i will tried to look for the location of the error. i will post any corrective measures if i can get it to work so that this problem might be of some uses to other members of the forum.

thanks again,
