Hi.
Why RH 8/9 is slow (GUI)?
I have installed RH9 on Intel 2.4 GHz, 128 MB DDR Ram and intel 845 MB machine. When i compare the same with Slackware 9.1 and Mandrake 9.1 running on Intel PIII 666 MHz with 128 MB SDRAM i found out that it is too fast. (with the same set of services running and KDE as desktop manager)
Why it is so?
Is there any way to improve the performance of RH8/9?
Regards
Vishal

i've been wondering this myself, RH9 gets really lethargic sometimes, especially when i'm switching between desktops with open windows. any ideas?

Disable some of the BOATLOAD of services started by default in a new RedHat install.

Yes..
I have already disabled lots of services and running bare minimum.
Even if i compare the same set of services on other distro i.e Mandrake or Slackware that too on a system with approx. 1/4th of less CPU speed (PIII 666MHz as compared to PIV 2.4 GHz) i found that these distos are very fast running the KDE. Out of all Slackware is impressive in speed.
What could be wrong with Redhat 8/9?

The more stuff they compile into the kernel, the slower the distro, that is why I've always found Redhat or Mandrake to be turtles compared with Slackware. Why not just use Slackware, it is a much better distro anyway?
