I've got half-life loaded but it gives me the crappy 16-bit colors error, and i've edited my XF86Config-4 file to run 16-bit. But then a new problem...my latest ATI drivers dont support 16-bit colors. That's the error it gives me when i try to load X. Does anyone know how to fix this? I've scoured the ATI website but nothing, maybe i missed something somewhere? Thanx fer the help! :)

I'm gonna plug in the standard do a forum search on your topic here. You might just find the right answer. Lots of ATI threads on here. I run nvidia so I can't be of much help.
Also the /dev/random forum is not the best place to ask this question. Maybe one of the mods will spot this and move it to a better forum.

Wizard,
Linux Catalyst Beta tester here,
Don't run 16-bit, it's ugly, do 24-bit
First off, what distro you on?
What version of ATI-drivers?
What video card you got?
Did you run fglrx assuming you have something later than a Radeon 7000?

Ok, here we go Red Hat 7.3, with an ATI Radeon 9000, the latese drivers from ati's website, cant remember the version number, and yes fglrxconfig did run and it's all set up. I went to change the colors under XF86Config, and did, then x wouldn't boot. The error message said that my drivers dont support 16 bit color, apparently 24-bit only, but then Half-Life won't work either. Still tryin and thanks fer the help.

I can run HL in 24-bit color mode.
I know there's an answer to this (and it's not "change the color depth"), I just can't remember what it is...
Hmm...
Have you tried checking what libraries your Wine opengl32.so file is linking against, as explained here:
