I have Linux setup on my PC, it is on a second hd partioned exculusivly for it, but when I boot it it loads and starts at the cmd line. How do I get the GUI screen to come up? Is there a special process that I need to start?

Login and type "startx".

What distro are you using? Have you configured X yet?

I'm soppry for delay, I posted from work and pc wasn't up to par at home. Anyway I have Mandrake 9.x (I thought it ws 9.2 i down loaded but it seems it may be 9.1 or earlier, I'm not sure how to tell yet.) I tried configuring X but when I run startx I get the error that no device was detected and I had set the adapter as 'vesa' as was recommened. Any ideas?

yeah, type "xf86config" after you log in and set up X for your computer. usually you set it up during the install but its not always perfect. sometimes you need to pick a different driver for video, monitor, yadda yadda

edit: you def. need to know your hardware if drake cant figure out what it is.
