Hey I'm having problems running Unreal Tournament 2003 in Linux. When I am going to run the game it shows the UT2003 logo (you know when you type ut2003 under run or terminal) and then the game goes black like it's going to start and then it doesn't. It just takes me back to my desktop (KDE).
I ran it under terminal and this is the message I receive:
Xlib: extension "XiG-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD" missing on display ":0.0".
OpenGL renderer relies on DXTC/S3TC support.
History:
Exiting due to error
Can someone please help me with this? I really want to play this game.
Thank you.

Make sure the ATi drivers are updated (the XFree DRI radeon driver does not support this, you need to install the drivers from www.ati.com )

I thought that newer releases of UT2k3 also didn't require S3TC support? Maybe it's a setting in your ~/.ut2003/System/UT2003.ini file?

I have no idea about the .ini files, but I'm going to try to install the ATI drivers. I've always failed on installing the ATI drivers.
I really hate ATI's drivers. Such a pain in the *** to install.

what's hard about ati drivers? install the .rpm, then:
su root
cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod
./make.sh
cd ..
./make_install.sh
fglrxconfig
simple.

That didn't even work. Forget that. I already have a nVidia GeForce FX 5600XT (256MB DDR).
I do have a problem with the updater. Everytime I try to update I always get this error:
Searching for installed products... done!
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0.0
What do I have to do to fix this problem?

Also don't have X running when ou do the nVidia update, it will yell at you.
What I do, hit Ctrl+Alt+F1, logon as root, type init 3, then install the drivers.

Thanks. I already had them (nVidia drivers) installed. Only thing was the updater that seems to not work so I just logged in as root and updated from there.
Installing the Epic Bonus Pack is a pain. I can't seem to get the announcer voices in the game. If anyone was successful on this please let me know on what to do to activate the announcer voices?
Thanks a lot guys for your help.

one of the bonus packs has an installer floating around the net, although I can't for the life of me remember exactly where.

Im having a problem with ut2003 crashing on startup as well. After installation finishes and attempts to start the initial setup where you enter the cdkey, I get the following code:
mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device
cp: reading `Sounds/AnnouncerNames.est_uax.uz2': Input/output error
failed to uncompress file.
./setup.sh: line 214: 8479 Aborted "$setup" "$@"
.setup8463: dynamic-link.h:57: elf_get_dynamic_info: Assertion `! "bad dynamic t ag"' failed.
./setup.sh: line 214: 12358 Aborted "$setup" "$@"
The setup program seems to have failed on x86/glibc-2.1
Fatal error, no tech support email configured in this setup
The program returned an error code (1)

Are you SURE your CD isn't damaged? Since it's copying from the CD (I think), I suspect CD damage (or a CD drive that won't read the CD for some reason). It might also be that the cp process got an I/O error while writing to your hard drive, maybe.

I just got through installing Windows XP and installed UT2003 without a hitch. The install for Windows XP did use CD3, which is where the file w/ the I/O error is from, but it didnt seem to copy near as many files as the linux install. I also tried using the version 436 installer on linux and it will not even begin the install process; it wont recognize the mounted cd and keeps asking me to mount it. I've tried mounting it manually as root and with the -t iso9660 options, but to no avail. I also get a Gkt+ micro mismatch message at the beginning of the install from ut2003 cd3 by the way.

436 is an Unreal Tournament version number, which is not UT2k3 (they're different games). That's why it isn't finding your CD.
Try finding 700 megs of free space somewhere, and doing a cat /dev/cdrom >/that/place/temp-file (replace /dev/cdrom with your actual CD device file). If that finishes successfully, then delete the temp-file (it's just a test).
If it finishes successfully, then you are able to read off the CD OK, so the problem might be your hard drive. Try to find the AnnouncerNames.est_uax.uz2 file on your system somewhere (likely /path/to/ut2003/Sounds), and see if you can copy it anywhere else on any hard drive. If not, then that's the issue -- but I have no idea how to fix it. Maybe turn DMA off on your hard drives if it's on, and turn it on if it's off?
