Is it acceptable to shutdown Linux from KDE? The reason I ask is because sometimes when I exit KDE to return to the login screen, my screen will go blank and I'm not able to do anything. CTL-ALT-BACKSPACE, CTL-ALT-DELETE does nothing. ALso Alt F1,F2 is dead as well. I don't like the idea of shutting off the machine when this happens.

If I were to start a root shell and do "shutdown -h now", would this be ok to do?

Thanks!

are you using a framebuffer console with nvidia drivers? that could cause the blank screen thing.

yes - shutdown -h now is just fine from a console in kde.

Thanks Hayl!

I'm running RH 9 on a Sony Vaio Laptop. It has an Intel 815 graphics card in it. I'm going to shutdown from KDE now rather than the login screen. I'm not sure why it does that from time to time. It doesn't happen all the time. It seems to happen when I leave my machine running 3-4 days, then reboot.
