This is happening with Mandrake 9.2 - both within KDE and Gnome.

My screen resolution is set at 640x480 - and if i set it bigger - it only kind of changes. When i set it to 1024x768, it gives me more desktop space but i kinda have to scroll to see it - if that makes any sense.

My monitor will not show more than 640x480 pixels, so whenever i set it higher than that - i have to put the mouse to the edge of the screen and it'll scroll over so i can see what's over there.

anyone know how to fix this? it sucks!

Sounds like yuur video card doesn't have enough memory to support more resolution directly and when you try to go too large at too high a color depth, you get a virtual desktop that requires scrolling.

What card do you have, how much RAM is on it, and how many colors are you trying to run at which resolutions?

i never had any problems with Mandrake 9.1 and this issue. I run dual monitors - one is on a GeForce 3, and the other is a Voodoo 3 - which, although its an older card, has plenty of video memory to display that resolution.

my xf86config file looks all messed up - i think that must be where the problem is.... /sigh

anyone have any ideas?

i think i might re-install 9.1 - then do the 9.2 upgrade instead of 9.2 full install.... hopefully that'll solve my issues.

are your horizontal Sync and vertical refresh rates set correctly for your monitor? you can find this info online or in the manual for your monitor :)

I have this same problem...

the one monitor is set right at 1024x768 but the other one is at 640x480 with scrolling...

both my cards are ATI 8meg.

if you find a fix for this i would really like to hear it..

Thanks,

Kodos

You must set your virtual desktop to 1024X768 to avoid the screen scrolling.
In the section "screen" of your XF86Config add the line: Virtual 1024 768

Did it but...

X crashes and says that "Virtual" is not a valid keyword in this section.

Oops sorry, try to put it in the SubSection "Display". If you have more than one SubSection "Display" (for different color depths), put it on every SubSection. I've done so in my XF86Config.

Ok.. looks like it already has that for both monitors but still does not work :(

**do the video cards need to be the exact same chipset?
when i do the settup and click the "configure only" for each adapter they
look fine but if i use that xinima (or what ever) extention one monitor
ends up at 640x480
