When you log out do you go to a console screen or to a graphical login?

If it's a graphical login, is it kdm that you use?

Are the paths to the new DE set up correctly in your login manager?

What DE did you install?

If you examine the /var/log/XFree86.0.log (or whatever the number is, do you see any error messages?
