i know this is going to sound stupid, but i downloaded fluxbox for slackware, untarred it and now need to install it
however, upon untarring i get 3 directories (install, usr and etc), and i have tried typing ./configure from all of these directories (especially usr/bin) but cannot configure it from anywhere?!
the install guide doesnt seem to go so basic as to tell you where to type this from :)

sounds like you downloaded a .tgz and untarred it. a .tgz is a slackware binary, which means that it is precompiled. As root do a:
installpkg xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.tgz
where xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is fluxbox and the version number, architecture, etc, to install it. You only need to untar .tar.gz files to compile and install them.

I have added the file .xinitrc to my home directory with the path exec /usr/X11R6/bin/fluxbox
chmod'd it
and added the directory .fluxbox
however at login, when i type startx, it fails.
Any idea why?

Any idea why? Not without seeing any errors...
