Has anyone been successful at installing E on red hat 9? I have read lots of problems others have had but no solutions!
It seemed to install ok from rpm but if I try to startx, I get a black screen with a X mouse cursor and that is it. I have always used E on other versions of RH but this is impossible.
Can someone respond if they have managed to get this working on RH9? And can you post how you did it? Thanks for any info.

I managed to get it working. I have yet to get it to open from the RH9 WM Loader when you login, but I just switch from Blackbox when I want to use it. What errors are you getting?
EDIT: Sorry, didn't read your whole post.
Try running through another WM like BB like I did. See if that works.

get the rpm and go to install it, you will get dependency problems however just go to rpmfind.net and get your dependencies
(there should be about 3 of them) then just follow the instructions in this link as to how to get it to your sessions menu at login (this howto is for fluxbox but it's the same for E) enjoy http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=65583

I can start twm by adding it to my .xinitrc file, and it has the same black screen too, but I can click for a menu so I guess twm seems to work.
Then I try to run enlightenment and it just freezes the xterm up until I ctrl+c out of it. Switchdesk does nothing.

I said in my first post that I had no problems installing it from rpm. My problem is that it won’t run.

ya you also said in you first post for those people that have done this in redhat9 to post how they did it and there it is, why not just try it? redhat isnt meant to have a .xinitric file that's why it's not there in the first place!!
why don't you get rid of the broken RPM you are trying to use, download the source code, and compile it on your system so it actually works properly?

good point you dont always have to use rpm just because your distro is based on it. Build a tarball to see if that works, that's the first thing I would do assuming you got these window managers launching right (which I doubt you do) why not just use gdm instead of going against the way your distro wants to do things?

That is a good idea. I will probably try that. I just assumed since it was specifically for RH9 that it would work without a hitch

Why do you doubt that I have the window managers launching right? I am using gdm. I tried to get E to launch in telinit 3 and 5, both times didn’t work. Twm works but I still can’t launch E from it either so something is definitely fowled up.
I was able to get E to compile and work great under gentoo. I just wish I could get my other problems solved under gentoo so I could fully switch over to it.
I appreciate the suggestions
:)
