Just installed Slackware 9.1 from CD on the weekend and am now in the process of getting my desktop up and running. through some trial and error, I have X working but the only window managers that I can run are fvwm2 and fvwm95. I tried putting startkde in the .xinitrc file but all I got was a windowish screen stating "Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation."

Once I press the OK button, I get a bunch of errors refering to libqt-mt.so.3
I'm assuming that after selecting the KDE package during the install that I have to do something else.

I take it that there's a Slackware package for a program called QT that I have to load?

QT is the library that KDE uses. You can get this package either from your slackware or from Slackware (www.slackware.com)'s site. It's under the "kde" dir.

So it is! guess I can file this under "bloody obvious, user oblivious" ... if it works out okay. I'm at work now but will have a chance to install the package tomorrow morning.

Will keep you posted....

Did you do a full install of all packages?

I am running Slack 9.1 myself.

Nope. It said that a full install was just over 2GB. Well, that's the size of the HD that I'm installing it on so I had to be picky.

Looks like I missed a package or two. Gnome wouln't work either. It's *****ing about another file so I'm gonna do some homework on the packages that look like the file in question.

Hmmmm.... I don't know what to say, other than, I have always done full installs and then removed packages I didn't want later (inetd, etc.).

I suppose I would install all the packages in the 'k' group, and try again.

With a full install, I have never had any problem running any X environments.

Best of luck.... SunOfTux

What file?

If you have the cds, I'd make sure I have every KDE/GNOME package.

installpkg /mnt/cdrom/slackware/kde/*
installpkg /mnt/cdrom/slackware/gnome/*
