Came across this article:

http://news.ft.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com/StoryFT/FullStory&c=StoryFT&cid=1066565743698&p=1012571727102

I never heard this before. It doesn't sound like it would be a good thing to me.

as a republican (and lover of decentralized government) I hope it will never be, the last thing we need is the government (much less the un) to control the internet.

I think right now there is a consortium that controls the standards for the programming, etc called W3. The content is what the government would like to control. And that is what we need to fight against.

The World Wide Web* Consortium (W3C)

About the W3C (http://www.w3.org/Consortium/#mission)

*= Please do not be one of those retards that can't seem to distinguish the WWW from the Internet. Web vs Internet (http://www.techweb.com/encyclopedia/defineterm?term=Webvs%2EInternet)

The link to Internet vs Web is no longer there. As far as I know the Web operates on top of the Internet. The internet is sort of like the "big pipe" with smaller "pipes" branching off.The internet includes the Web, email, peer filesharing, newsgroups, BBS, usenet, some university/institution/corporate channels/bandwidth, military/government channels/bandwidth, streaming radio/video., and probably some other stuff I can't remember. Also, there is the Internet2 which has more bandwidth. It is used exclusively for military/government/university/institutional/corporate file transfer and information transfer.

Simply:
The Internet is the world-wide network itself.
The World Wide Web is a service that is provided via the Internet.
Any network service can be provided via the Internet, it just so happens that the web is by far one of the most popular and well-known.

Actually it is. Go to techweb.com/encyclopedia and type World Wide Web in the search field. Then click the link Web vs Internet.

one thing we don't need is internet being controlled by corporates. Can you imagine internet being controlled by Microsoft?

I doubt we'd be here if they did. Any single entity having control of the Internet would destroy most of what's great about the Internet. Fortunately, that can never happen.

Maybe they'll run the internet like the Oil for Food program and let France, Germany and Russia control it and lease it out to the poor countries of the world for a large profit.
