Are there any iso images of suse 9 somewhere?
because I've got no idea what to do with this (ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/current/)

They are trying to keep tight control of the operating system and make a buck while they are at it. That way there aren't a gazillion Suse clones popping up all over like there are for Redhat.
The proceedure which they do encourage and does work very nicely is to go to that /boot directory and download the boot.iso . Burn that to a cdrom and boot up with the cd.
When you get booted up, select the ftp install from one of the Suse mirrors.
They don't provide a ISO image. All you can do is either buy it or do a ftp install.
