I wonder if someone could tell me how long it will take me on a i686 to compile & install a full Gentoo w/KDE.
I already have the 2 CDs.

A question I've been wondering about myself. I'd start by stating that you haven't provided enough system information for anyone to answer the question though :) ... Your processor model and speed, as well as the type and amount of RAM your system has will be very significant. Secondarily; you hard drive bus and speed will have some bearing as well. A Gentoo installation (though I haven't actually done one myself yet) involves different levels to start with (I though III, I think... ). Which one will you be attempting to try? On an off-topic note... Thanks for the helpful links in your sig! viperlin 11-08-2003, 07:07 PM you only need 1 cd for compiling it all. what CPU do you have? Darkbolt 11-08-2003, 07:39 PM if you downloaded the 2cd set, I believe its binaries, so you dont need to compile....I may be wrong, or that may not be what you have. Hayl 11-08-2003, 07:41 PM if you are doing it from stage1 and compiling it all from scratch to optimize for your processor, plan on at least 1 - 2 days to get a working system with KDE. if you start in the morning, you will be able to get it to the point where it is compiling KDE and all its deps (XFree, etc) while you are asleep. As was already mentioned, RAM makes a huge difference in compile times. soda_popstar 11-08-2003, 07:54 PM Since you downloaded the second ISO, I'm assuming that you want to use GRP? With GRP, you can use the binaries that are precompiled by Gentoo, so that you don't have to compile it yourself. Nu-Bee 11-08-2003, 08:11 PM All: Sorry for the sketchy info; here's the info... AMD 900 Mhz CPU (Athlon Thunderbird w 256K Cache) 256M RAM 333 FSB) ATA-100 7200 RPM IBM hard drive. I have the CD set optimized for i686/Athlon.... viperlin 11-08-2003, 08:21 PM bout 2 days to get ur system up & runnin (including gnome) it's worth it Nu-Bee 11-08-2003, 08:33 PM Originally posted by viperlin bout 2 days to get ur system up & runnin (including gnome) it's worth it Thanks....I just wondered how much time I had to set aside w/o the computer. justlinux.com
