I've been lookin' at some classes, and I figured "what better way to learn an O/S than to plunge right in and use it"? I'm gettin' better with Linux, but I'm not a guru yet...

I figured I'd sign on for some college classes (aim is for a Bachelors)... but I've found out somethin' kind of interesting.

Linux doesn't seem to be supported in a lot of programs. I mean, as far as I know, outside of "Flash", MX studio isn't supported by Linux...

Also, the college I'm looking at requires MS Office.

It seems you can take Linux by itself in some places, but there doesn't seem to be strong support for Linux at most of the places I've looked...

Anybody else runnin' into this?

It depends on what type of classes you'll be taking. I went to school for a Computer Science degree. If you do this, your computer science department should (I hope so) be more than willing to stay open on what Operating System/Apps you use. They will have *nix servers/workstations for you to do your work on. As for your general education, you'll most likely have to use Office. Just my 2 cents.

OpenOffice can read and write (most) MS Office document types.

Yup. Spreadsheets, presentations, text . . . OOO does it all!

You can also use crossover office to install MS Office. I'm running office 2k on my 'nix box with it...works great.

Yeah, but the output to THEM has to be in .doc format.

Also, that doesn't solve Macromedia...

Oh well... I'll probably use Windows, but it's weird they don't have stuff for Mac users either (I'm not a big fan of Mac, but I know a lot of folks who are).

I pick people that are Linux savy. These usually are the best and the brightest. I don't recommend putting any money into Drone U. The degree will probably be as worthless as the software.
