I'd like to get a copy of SUSE Linux 9 for the desktop but I can't order it because they send the CD's in the mail and since I live in Canada and it is the fall, the CD's will freeze. I guess there is not solution. In the past I downloaded Redhat and than paid for updates.

You can download SuSE, too:

http://www.suse.com/us/private/download/suse_linux/index.html

Current practice is you download a small installer (20MB), write it onto a CD-ROM, use it to boot your computer, and then the remaining packages are being downloaded as you install the OS. Cablemodem recommended. ;)

I belive all you need is the first CD... I have done many installs of suSE 9.0 but I did custom installs.

I will check if so I could send you the first suSU 9.0 CD. then you can use YAST to get the rest.

And where did you hear about CD's freezing?

I'm a Redhat user and I'd like to switch to SUSE. I don't know, maybe the CD's wouldn't freeze but it is cold outside and with a cable modem I was always able to d/l all 3 RH CD's and than pay for updates. I would rather have the full version rather than an eval version. Well if you don't think that the CD's would be destroyed by the cold than I'll go ahead and order from the website, and I guess it's not too expensive so even if they did freeze it's not the end of the world.

Well mate if you go for it you will be impressed, I have the Pro set (5 CD's)
and suSE 9.0 is outstanding.

I did a install to a IBM laptop formatted NTFS (XP Pro), suSE resized the HD and install it's self no worries and it read NTFS. (Dual Boot)

So far after many installs I have only had small problems one was a sound card issue and the other was a mouse issue and a few small things other wise it is working very well.

Are you able to get updates? Is there an update utility that SUSE uses kind of like Redhats uptodate?

Yes via Yast (Yet another Setup Tool) it works great and is not just updates but also for DLing apps.

Check out the web page http://www.suse.de/en/private/index.html

IIRC, the SuSE download version isn't an eval version. All of the available packages can be installed off of the 'Net, if I'm not mistaken...

You can get a security patches by using Yast On Lineupdate YOU it will install only the patches needed by your system works very well. My smtp server is setup to check daily all done by YAST. Yast will help set up all kinds of services. They hardware detection is great you can change video cards and yast will stop at boot to reconfigure the X server. I have used SuSE from 6.0 on for most all my servers. I buy the professional each time a new version is released.:)

Hey mate, why not go to the suSE web page and take a look around:confused:

But I was just there and it looks like only the live-eval version of 9 is up.

Great Distro you will like it:cool:

Citadel.

I also live in Canada, and CD's getting very cold is not a problem. If you try to read them before they come up to room temperature there might be condensate on them that would keep the laser from reading the surface, so just let them come up to room temperature before use.

The various computer and music stores do NOT use temperature controlled trailers to ship software and hardware in Canada during the 5-6 months of cold weather.

For what it's worth there's a "disenchanted newbie" on alt.os.linux.suse whose interested in selling his boxed set of SuSE9.0 Pro.

As far as I know, the current edition of SuSE can be installed via FTP but there are not entire ISO's posted anywhere.

Hey mate, make sure you say Eastern Canada

Out here on the tropical west coast Vancouver Island (Victoria) we only get about a few weeks of winter.

Lets not keep the myth going that (all of) Canada is a frozen waste land, I already get enough for them yanks;)

Well, seeing how the Calgary Olympic Park already has really good skiing conditions, pretty much everywhere "East of the lower mainland" does get a good 5 months when lows below freezing (O Celsius) are common. But they are a good five months ! :-)

As chance would have it I was in Point Pelee just last week, which I realized was as far south as...hmm, Southern Oregon. Weather conditions are more complex then just the latitude, but this puts things in perspective.

Here's a tip to save a few $$, The SuSE 9 Professional "upgrade" has exactly the same CDs as the full Pro version, just not the manuals -a previous version of SuSE is NOT required.

Calgary!?! That is Eastern Canada, anything over the "Wall" the rockies is east.

For rememberance day it was sunny and 17c here in Victoria :-)

Cheer's time for my AM swim at a local lake...
