i've just d/l and installed all the packages for gnome 2.4 and i Have to say: Gnome rawks.
but....
i'm having some trouble installing libgnomeprint.
it keeps giving me:
[root@VINCE i]# rpm -Uvh libgnomeprint-2.4.0-1.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
ghostscript-fonts-std is needed by libgnomeprint-2.4.0-1
libcrypto.so.0.9.7 is needed by libgnomeprint-2.4.0-1
libssl.so.0.9.7 is needed by libgnomeprint-2.4.0-1
cups-lib is needed by libgnomeprint-2.4.0-1
i already have openssl-0.9.7a installed
ghostscript-fonts-std doesnt want to install because it complains about urw-fonts >= 1.1, which i already have installed.

Just go through and install everything it complains about. Or get some tool like apt to do it for you. What distro? Search this site because there are hundreds of posts concerning this issue.
Take a look here: http://apt.freshrpms.net/

ok, I got the ghostscript-font-std so that part is fixed.
I uninstalled libgnomeprint and tried to apt-get it..
it gives me:
[root@VINCE i]# apt-get install libgnomeprint

You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
avifile: Depends: libSDL-1.1.so.0 but it is not installable
gimp-print-plugin: Depends: libgimp-1.2.so.0
Depends: libgimpui-1.2.so.0
gnometab: Depends: libgnomeprint-2.so.0
Depends: libgnomeprintui-2.so.0
gtk2-engines: Depends: gtk-thinice-engine but it is not installable
libgnomeprint: Obsoletes: libgnomeprint22
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
AND ONE MORE THING
GNOME 2.4 runs soo slowly on my computer... much slower than 2.2. Anyone else experience this?
Anyone have a fix? Any optimizations?

I'm telling you my friend... RPM's are hell...
Debian/Slack/Gentoo/ rule ;p
Anyways, do "apt-get -f install"
then: "apt-get update"
Then try again to install gnome, and if that doesn't get you far, then change the sources in your sources.list file to the unstable (sid) ones.
Maybe that'll do something for you.
Good Luck!!

YES.. RPMS are hell..
I was meaning to install debian over the weekend.. but debian doesnt like my ata card, and i dont really have time to mess around with things right now.. maybe next quarter.
i think i have everything fixed though.
I used red carpet and and updated everything with the XD unstable packages.
I hope this runs better... cuz right now, everything is sooo slow and lagging.
-vince-
try:
rpm -Uvh --nodeps file.rpm

ok... red carpet seems to have fixed the dependency issues.
Now... does anyone know how to make gnome 2.4 run FASTER? ..besides getting a faster computer.
