i have been using slack9.1 and red hat 9 on this machine for a while now. everything was working pretty well, but some things have been bugging me. and others just popped up.

in slack 9.1, the use of alsa makes it impossible to play half-life or counter strike with wine without a sound lagg. i have tried all the fixes, none work. i tried reverting to OSS, but guess what? - error while loading the module for my sound card. these simple issues coupled with the ENDLESS configuring of everything installed is starting to grate on me. screw slackware 9.1.

on top of that, my JAMD booted today and informed me that it could not locate an initial terminal and hangs in the boot. i am not happy about that either. screw red hat for not finding an initial terminal when i needed it most.

my libranet 2.7 which i just installed and upgraded A) gaim and B) samba doesn't have gnome anymore, broke its fonts, doesn't have the login manager anymore, and is generally pissing me off. screw debian, i have never had it upgrade without breaking my system. and screw its lack of automatic hardware detection also.

My only request is that if i spend the HOURS installing and configuring these systems, they at least work on thier own and not mysteriously break on me. i had them all working yesterday. but all of these distros have 'slowly decomposed' over time. i try to maintain everything as best i can, i have backups of all my stuff but i feel i shouldnt need them 'just because'.

it is times like these that i am glad i still have windows XP on a spare partition. i have to modify a resume to give to someone tomorrow, and i do not have the time this evening to reinstall and tweak a linux distro AGAIN.

thanks for listening.

I don't know why you wanna run Windows software using Linux OS!

Using Jamd is not using Red Hat, Using Libranet is not using Debian. So why are you bashing those when you are using different distros?

I use Slackware 9 & Debian Sid, the real distros, and have none of those problems.

I know how you feel sclebo05. Distros break all the time for me but always because I installed/edited something incorrectly. I keep 5 distros on my hd. 4 that I tinker around with and experiment with until they break and 1 that I don't touch except to install security upgrades. Sure my 'stable' distro has some slightly outdated software on it but all my peripherals always function correctly and all the software is configured to my liking. If I had to get a resume out and my other distros were not working, it wouldn't matter me if I was using kde 3.1.2 and OO1.0.2 or latest WM and OO1.1.0. Just fire up old faithful and type away.

funny you should say that, JAMD was my 'old faithful'. the reason for that was that it always just worked :)

and dawg, libranet is debian with another installer. i use apt-get from the prompt to pull down sarge packages, the kernel recompiles the same, the scripts are the same....
