i have been using slack9.1 and red hat 9 on this machine for a while now. everything was working pretty well, but some things have been bugging me. and others just popped up.
in slack 9.1, the use of alsa makes it impossible to play half-life or counter strike with wine without a sound lagg. i have tried all the fixes, none work. i tried reverting to OSS, but guess what? - error while loading the module for my sound card. these simple issues coupled with the ENDLESS configuring of everything installed is starting to grate on me. screw slackware 9.1.
on top of that, my JAMD booted today and informed me that it could not locate an initial terminal and hangs in the boot. i am not happy about that either. screw red hat for not finding an initial terminal when i needed it most.
my libranet 2.7 which i just installed and upgraded A) gaim and B) samba doesn't have gnome anymore, broke its fonts, doesn't have the login manager anymore, and is generally pissing me off. screw debian, i have never had it upgrade without breaking my system. and screw its lack of automatic hardware detection also.
My only request is that if i spend the HOURS installing and configuring these systems, they at least work on thier own and not mysteriously break on me. i had them all working yesterday. but all of these distros have 'slowly decomposed' over time. i try to maintain everything as best i can, i have backups of all my stuff but i feel i shouldnt need them 'just because'.
it is times like these that i am glad i still have windows XP on a spare partition. i have to modify a resume to give to someone tomorrow, and i do not have the time this evening to reinstall and tweak a linux distro AGAIN.
thanks for listening.
