I'm using both an external serial modem & an internal intel linmodem. They both dial my isp & my isp prompts me for a this:
System password:
I have no idea what a system password is. I don't need it for windows :)
I'm using wvdial without stupid mode. & if I use Stupid Mode, ppp never makes a connection.
How on earth can I make an internet connection?
I called my isp & they were NO help at all. They refused to help me because they said they do not support linux.
Oh, I need help desperately. Thank you!

I take it that you didn't set the ISP account up.
You might want to ask the person who did...what the password is.
Other than a broadband 24/7 account I have never seen an internet login that didn't want your USERID and PASSWORD.
And BTW, 99.99% of ISPs will -ALL- say "We don't support linux."
What they are really saying is: "We are ignorant as rocks about linux so say this to cover up our ignorance & make you feel bad."
Here's the thing.
Previously (before my last attempt), my ISP did ask for username & password, & I know those (I have all the ISP info that they gave), & I can get the connection up in windows with my username & password. But when I try in linux, it first asks for a system password & that's not right. So I have another question.
Is there any dial-up software for linux that will work as "well" as the dial-up software in windows? Why does the windows dialer work so well? All I tell it is my username & pass, & it dials in & handshakes in no time, no problems at all! & the problem isn't my modems, I've used both before on linux in the past. Thanks again for your help.

You might try kppp, I haven't had any problems like that with it yet.
What I believe it's asking for is either your user or root password in Linux, but you're right, it shouldn't be asking for a system password.
Maybe somebody passworded wvdial out.
