I am the sad owner of a brand new Sharp Zaurus SL-5600. "Sad" because I can't get the stinkin thing to even be recognized in Linux. Works like a charm in Windoze, though!
I was just wondering if anyone out there has a 5600 and has gotten it to sync with Linux. I tried patching my kernel (2.4.18-14) but that didn't work. I just got done trying to install a custom built kernel, the 2.4.22 that supposedly has Linux PDA drivers installed. I botched the kernel build (I think) because NONE of my modules loads. lsmod returns... nothing. Screwed. My next attempt is a recent copy of Slackware I'm going to install on a spare 15gig partition I have free. Slack 9.1 comes with the 2.4.22 kernel. I'll do a barebones install and see if I can get the Z to come up. If so, then I'll swap out my RH 8.0 for Slack 9.1. Oh, joy...
What a pain. And all this with a LINUX-BASED pda. Somebody shoot me in the head.

Yea, you'd think it would work.. unfortunetly it won't. The best you can do is setup an FTP-style server, and write some simple scripts to exchange the data. :)

now here's one thing i'm curious about. I have a dell axim X5 and i don't have any idea on where to start to get the files, but it runs through the USB port. Also, my DC runs through a USB port. Under mandrake, my DC is detected as a removeable USB hdd and just mounted like that, and it works fine. What i want to know if, why couldn't a PDA do that?
i guess it could be for the reason that its different media types, but i was just curious..
If anybody knows of any active sync like programs for linux, i'd appriciate to know. or, maybe there is a way to figure out what dev it is, and maybe it can be mounted or something like that.

Your digital camera uses a FAT system to organize its photos... and FAT is compatible with Linux. PocketPC's use a different setup as far as I know, so that's why it doesn't see it.
The best way to do it is to have a Windows computer setup on the serverthat the dell can sync to.. and then do the conversions.

that's a good idea. I may try that. As for the FAT partition, i don't believe it does, as far as i know at least. Maybe the OS (win mobile 2k3) made a new FS or something like that.

Yea, wouldn't surprise me if MS made some new filesystem for it. Palm's have better luck syncing with Linux... the new ones with OS 5 look pretty nice too, I may be considering one of those if it will sync with Linux pretty much directly. Then I'd be rid of Windows for good. :D

yeah, they are pretty jacked little machines too (jacked as in fast) i got my pocket pc for free and i have windows installed so its not a big deal for me, i may get some flash memory for it and a reader, so i could just use that.
Oh, and another question, since i'm no programmer at all, is there a place where we could suggest that the newer kernels have better support for these things?

Hi, I just came over a program when browsing a dvd that came with a mag I bought. It was something called java zaurus sync. And I thought about this thread.
I took a look at their page and it seems a bit early in development, but you might want to check it out:

Thanks. That's pretty much what I'm chasing after right now: CompactFlash card to connect to my LAN and do ftp transfers of files, etc. I can dual-boot into Windows and do a nice sync once a week or so for extra back-up with the stock software. Problem is, though, I like in Central America and NO ONE down here has a stinkin' CompactFlash card - ethernet, RJ-45... Oh, well. Thanks for the input, all.

Well... sorta kinda...
1. I have ethernet. I have a LAN set up here in my house. I run wired, not wireless (I like paranoia when it comes to system security).
2. I do not have a CompactFlash ethernet card, and I have no stinkin where to buy one here. I drove all around the bloomin city yesterday looking and asking, and NObody has one. They look at me like a cow looking over a new gate... duuuuhh...??? So, it looks like eBay and either international shipping or a couple months' wait until I'm in the States for xmas (with the mom-in-law! oh, help me...).
Cheers.
