I'm trying to get Gentoo working right. This is what I have:

boot = hda8
swap = hda9
root = hda10

This is my lilo:

image=/boot/kernel-2.4.20-gentoo-r5
label=gentoo
root=/dev/hda10
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.20-gentoo-r5
append="root=/dev/ram0 init=linuxrc"

My question is this, how do I get it to point to the /boot partition? I have several distros but can't get this thing to work right. I tried to add boot=/dev/hda8 but when I run lilo it goes :eek: at me.

Could someone post there lilo.conf for their Gentoo?

Ideas maybe? The how to doesn't help.

:D :D :D

Post your error messages or any observable output of LILO. Where did you install LILO? MBR or superblock?

Well, it don't like the entry for the /boot partition. Here is what I get though:

[root@smoker dale]# /sbin/lilo
Added linux *
Added linux-nonfb
Added failsafe
Added gentoo
Syntax error at or above line 32 in file '/etc/lilo.conf'
[root@smoker dale]#

Here's lilo.conf:

image=/boot/kernel-2.4.20-gentoo-r5
label=gentoo
boot=/dev/hda8
root=/dev/hda10
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.20-gentoo-r5
append="root=/dev/ram0 init=linuxrc"

The red one is line 32, the :eek: I mentioned.

My Gentoo boot starts but doesn't complete. It hangs after USB stuff. I ran into that before. Can't remember how I fixed it though just that it was lilo.

BTW, Gentoo was working before. I was trying to install Linux from Scratch and erased the /etc directory for my Mandrake. You can probably guess but I had to reinstall Mandrake and lost my lilo. :rolleyes:

I may can get it to work by using the bzImage but I really like the genkernel one best.

Lilo is on MBR as always for me. I have two drives but the second one is for data only.

Any of that make sense??

:confused: :D :D

edit: This thing posted before I was ready. It just went by itself. I was just typing along and phuff. :confused:

Just check to see if that is your bootable partition...there are several ways...a quick one is "cfdisk".

<Slaps forehead> You got to be kidding right?

Be right back.

ME; idiot, idiot, idiot.

Couldn't be that easy. here's cfdisk:

hda8 Boot Logical Linux ext3 197.41
hda9 Logical Linux swap 600.45
hda10 Logical Linux ReiserFS 3997.49
hda11 Logical Linux ReiserFS 3997.49

Guess not. <crying like a baby>

Any other ideas. It does start to boot ya know. It just won't finish. I may try the other kernel. <few more tears>

Any more ideas??

:D :D :D :D

Hey, could it that it is ext3 for the /boot partition?

It says at or above line 32. Check the spelling of "kernel-2.4.20-gentoo-r5" in lilo.conf and in /boot.

I re-checked it. It matches exactly. I had checked earlier though. I'm not a good typer.

Looks like I have got to use the other kernel. <crying a bit more> Got any handkerchiefs?

Better yet, any more ideas?

It acts like it can't find the init part. It starts to boot and, I assume it's the kernel part, then stops. :confused:

:D :D :D

Just to make sure I'll recheck the how to and try the other kernel thingy.

It booted fine with the other kernel. I just can't figure out why the other one wouldn't work.

All's well that ends well.

Thanks.

Get any ideas, shove them over my way.

When you compiled your new kernel did you use the "old" configs?

dalek

When I installed Gentoo, I just followed the how to. I did do both kernels though. The one it makes AND the genkernel. Not sure there was a "old" config.

I'm not a Gentoo expert but some don't like the genkernel one. I found that it worked fine, at least it would let me connect to the net. Not sure about the other though.

I think I'm :confused: again. It did boot though.

I went back a read the how to, I couldn't find anything that I missed. The kernel and init are where they are supposed to be for both kernels. I just can't get the other to work. Maybe when I compiled the genkernel it changed something and it prevents the other from working. Clueless here.

All I could suggest at this point is to compare your config files for each one and see if you can turn up the difference.

I'll keep poking around and see if I turn up anything. I do like that Gentoo though. It's really nice. Just have to get everything installed and working right. Got to have;

Powstatd - for UPS
Java - for Mozilla
NVIDIA drivers - No luck yet with that. :confused:

Then I have to get DSL. :D

Thanks for the help though. I'll keep banging my head against that wall.

When you get hooked up with DSL...try "Roaring Penguins" "PPPOE" for adsl. The very simplest way to connect. Sorry I couldn't help you further.

You helped. This kernel is OK. Really wanted to see the difference.

DSL, I hope they will be out this far soon. I found out they have two big fat T1 lines about 2 to 3,000 feet from my house. Just a bit to far. I wonder if I went to the phone company with a 5 gallon bucket of diesel and a 50lb bag of fertilizer would help any. Bet they would at least move. he he he he

Hopefully soon. I just dread the bill. Disabled and all.

Thanks for the help. On to Linux from Scratch. :rolleyes:

Later
