I recently installed Libranet 2.7, and after updating pretty much everything (:)) i started "customizing" KDE3. While going through this process, i noticed that KDE's startup/shutdown sounds worked fine (goodness... i hate those sounds..) but on trying to play a cd in xmms (or any of the other (there are 5. i do not need 5. but there are 5. i will remove some. soon.) cd players.) i do not get anything from the speakers. this is true for anything else that should have sound EXCEPT for kde.
any ideas why? The sound module that is being used (i do not know which off the top of my head) is the one that Libranet autodetected. I have an onboard soundcard - probably of the Intel make. (I have an Intel 810 (or similar) onboard videocard, that is probably combined with the soundcard.)

Im guessing that xmms wants to use a different sound server than kde

Some one will certainly correct me but xmms may want to use the enlightenment sound player and kde uses arts.

try starting xmms from a terminal and see if it spits out any error messages to the console.

will do, thanks for the idea.
btw, what do i do if it IS trying to use something other than arts?

XMMS comes with 3 sound servers, eSound, OSS and Arts. So you probably have them.

If not, you can get the arts-output plugin from XMMS's site.

interestingly, i was playing a cd in xmms ("Godspeed, you black emperor! - Slow riot for new zero kanada" to be exact.) and i plugged a set of headphones into the plug on the front of my cdrom drive.. and whee! we've got music!
but how about music coming through the SPEAKERS? plugged into the BACK??

:)

also, i started up Xine, and it crashed saying it didn't have the OSS drivers. (why ever not..) so i told it in no uncertain terms to use arts.. it ran fine, and even played Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail .... except for the audio.

bah!

For the speakers, you may need to run an audio wire from the cdplayer to the sound card. Unless you have one already :) then check the mixer and make sure the master, pcm, master1, pcm1 are all turned on. And make sure the volume on the speakers is turned up.:)

speakers are up. i know because i had to listen to the kde startup sound. :)

i will check the mixer.

thanks for the ideas!
